SHE'S ALL RIGHT is about a Black trans woman trying to get acceptance from her family while pursuing justice within a world that does not value her life. This is a political film grounded by a poignant love story. The true-life story of Debra Hopkins has particular urgency for our time not only because of the real-world insights it provides about the American legal system but also because it focuses on trauma passed down from one generation to the next. This story provides a model for healing and restorative justice.

 

Black trans women, like Debra Hopkins, are some of the most marginalized people in our society. Yet even though she is the victim of a dehumanizing crime, in the end Debra does not remain a victim and is not defined by what has happened to her. Unlike real life in which many people like Debra do not survive, in this film she gets the help she needs to begin the long process of healing.
